Change in Major, Division / Specialization or Supervisor

Change in Division (GSAM)

GSAM students will be allowed to change their Division with approval of the Dean. Most changes in Division will require an official statement from the student regarding this change.
Applications for changes in Division must be submitted to the Academic Office by 16:30 of the final day of classes in the second quarter of the 1st semester of enrollment. Applications for changes will NOT be acceped after the deadline has passed.

*NOTE: Students should bare in mind that in most cases changes in Division will require an additional change in Supervisor. In that case, you have to communicate with prospective supervisors from your new Division and report your selection to the Academic Office. You will be notified if your request is approved.


Change in Specialization (GSM)

GSM students will be allowed to change their Specialization with approval of the Dean. Most changes in Specialization will require an official statement from the student regarding this change. Applications for changes in Specialization will be accepted before the beginning of the second semester of enrollment.

Application Deadline for Change in Specialization:
By March 20 (changes will apply from April)
By September 15 (changes will apply from October).

Change in Supervisor

Students may apply to change their supervisor in a given Division/Specialization/Program if there is a change in research topic, etc. The change in supervisor must be understood and approved by both the student's current supervisor and the faculty member to whom the student wishes to change. If you wish to change your supervisor without changing your Division/Specialization, etc. please complete the designated application form and submit it to the Academic Office by the appropriate deadline.

This form is for students who wish to change supervisors within their own Division/Specialization. If you would like to change your Division/Specialization in addition to changing your supervisor, please fill out the appropriate application form from above. For any questions regarding changes to your student status, please contact the Academic Office.


Change in Length of Study

Graduate students enrolled in the Accelerated Completion Programs who will not be able to complete all requirements within the planned program length, can apply for extension of enrollment by the following deadlines.

Program Program Length Application Deadline
 GSAM 1 Year → 1.5 or 2 Years By the end of the 1st Semester
 GSAM 1.5 Years → 2 Years By the end of the 2nd Semester
 GSM 1.5 Years → 2 Years By the end of the 2nd Semester
 GSAD 2 Years → 2.5 or 3 Years By the end of the 4th Semester

Application Form for Extension of Enrollment

NOTE 1:GSAM/GSM students may remain enrolled for the entire 2-year program length without applying for extension; however, in this case the tuition payment schedule will not be altered and students will be billed according to the schedule registered upon enrollment to APU.
NOTE 2: 2-year GSAD students may remain enrolled for the entire 3-year program after submission of an extension application; however, the tuition payment schedule will not be altered from the 2-year payment plan.

Change in Major (APS<->ICP) - GSA Only

Change in Major (Transfer)

Cross-Major Transfer (APS<-> ICP) applications will only be accepted by the end of the applicant's 1st Semester.
< 1. Requirements: 10 or more credits from the subjects required for completion by the end of the first semester
2. Application Deadines:
Fall Semester - last working day on or before January 10 [Spring Transfer]
Spring Semeseter - last working day on or before July 10 [Fall Transfer]
3. Application Materials: (please submit the items below to the Academic Office by the appropriate application deadline.)
A) Application for Change in Major
B) A typed essay (approx. 800 words) on why you wish to transfer
C) 10,000yen (certificate stamp) Examination Fee Application for Change in Major

4. Notification of resuts: The application will be evaluated and the student will be notified of the result by mid-March or mid-September
5. Credit Transfer: All previously earned credits / grades will b etransferred on April 1 for the Spring Semester or September 21 for the Fall Semester.
