Next President Chosen in Open Call for Applications
This year for the first time ever, APU issued an open call for applications for candidates to succeed President KORENAGA Shun upon the conclusion of his term of office on December 31, 2017.
After a screening, Mr. Haruaki Deguchi, the founder of Lifenet Life Insurance Company, was appointed as the next president. He will serve for a term of three years starting on January 1, 2018.
The open recruitment of senior management was proposed as part of APU’s governance reforms and internationalization efforts under the Top Global University Project, so in AY2017, we established a new system for the recommendation of presidential candidates, which is almost unheard of for a Japanese university.
A 10-person Presidential Candidate Selection Committee composed of faculty, staff, and alumni (four of whom were non-Japanese) screened the candidates who applied or were recommended from both inside and outside the university and from within and outside Japan, and then nominated candidates to the Board of Trustees of the Ritsumeikan Trust, which in turn selected Mr. Deguchi as the next president at its meeting on November 24, 2017.
