On Saturday, November 21, 2009, the APU 10th Anniversary and Confucius Institute 3rd Anniversary Commemorative Symposium: "Perspectives on a New Era –Japan, America and China" will be held at the APU Millennium Hall.
Asahi Shimbun Editor-in-Chief and APU Visiting Professor, FUNABASHI Yoichi, PhD will deliver a keynote speech under the title of "Perspectives on a New Era –Japan, America and China". Founding President of APU, SAKAMOTO Kazuichi will then emcee a panel discussion with Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, ORIX Corporation and APU Academic Advisory Committee Member, MIYAUCHI Yoshihiko; Former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to China, ANAMI Koreshige; and Dean of Faculty of Law/Professor, Keio University, Former President of The Japanese Association of International Relations, KOKUBUN Ryosei, PhD. The panel will hold a discussion on "World Economic Domination and Collapse", "The Environmental Energy Problem", and "The Korean Peninsular; dangers and North Korea".
"Confucius Institutes" are a government project and have been established by the Chinese government around the world to spread the Chinese language and culture. The first Confucius Institute in Japan was established in October, 2005 at Ritsumeikan University and the Confucius Institute at APU was established in April, 2007. The Confucius Institute at APU – the first Confucius Institute in Kyushu – has been holding various lectures aimed at local citizens, developing programs to promote a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and art, as well as holding Chinese language lectures on the APU campus.
APU will mark its 10th anniversary in April, 2010 and has set aside the 12 month period from October, 2009 until September 2010 to celebrate this milestone through a range of events to express our gratitude for the last 10 years and look towards the next decade.
The symposium will no doubt prove to be a wonderful opportunity to hear from leading business, political and educational figures. We hope to see you there!

FUNABASHI Yoichi, PhD: Former Asahi Shimbun Beijing Bureau, Washington Bureau, American General Bureau Chief. Editor-in-Chief and APU Visiting Professor, took up the post of Editor-in-Chief in 2007 (This post had been empty for 30 years and is positioned above the four Editing Bureau Chiefs and Editorial Chiefs).
