On Saturday, December 4, 2010, ZHU Yuanzhe (APM4, China) was awarded the "Fighting Spirit Prize" at the 4th Hong Kong Cup All Japan University Students English Speech Contest Finals held at the Tokyo International Forum in Marunouchi, Tokyo.
Of the one-hundred entrants who entered the preliminary round, fifteen participants, two of whom are APU students, were chosen to deliver their speeches at the final contest. Each contestant gave a seven-minute speech, followed by three-minute questions and answer time. Mr. Zhu's speech, under the theme of "Cosmopolitan Hong Kong", drew an impressive image of Hong Kong describing its economic vigor, pop culture and university education excellence.
Commenting on the event, Mr. Zhu said: "Besides gaining a deeper understanding of Hong Kong in many aspects, I greatly appreciate what I have been able to learn from other contestants who share a keen interest in overseas culture". He now looks forward to an expenses-paid two-week study trip at the Chinese University of Hong Kong with fellow winners in early March.
This annual event is organized by The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Tokyo, in collaboration with The Daily Yomiuri and Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports Science and Technology. This contest offers a golden opportunity for domestic and non-native English speaking students in Japan to expand their understanding of Hong Kong, display their English proficiency and also contribute to the strengthening of the Hong Kong - Japan friendship.
APU students have a proud track record of participating in essay and speech contests all over Japan. Supported by our bilingual campus, we look forward to more APU students adding their names to the growing list of contest winners.
