International Academic Conference Held in Singapore

On February 25th and 26th, 2014, APU and the Nanyang Technological University S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies co-hosted an international academic conference entitled "Mitigating Freshwater Conflicts in Asia: Harnessing Avenues for Cooperation." This was the second time for APU to hold a conference overseas in cooperation with Nanyang Technological University, after the first conference in December 2011. President KORENAGA Shun lead the delegation from APU, which included the Founding President, Professor Emeritus SAKAMOTO Kazuichi, as well as five other faculty members.

The opening reception on February 25th began with a greeting from APU President KORENAGA followed by a welcome message from Mr. ANDO Toshihide, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Japan in Singapore. Nanyang Technological University President Emeritus Professor Cham Tao Soon, who is an APU Academic Advisor, was in attendance at the reception. The President and Vice President of the Singapore Alumni Association were also among the attendees.

The academic conference, directed by APU Pro Vice President Edgar Porter, began the next day with a greeting from Ambassador Barry Desker, the Dean of the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies. In addition to a keynote speech from Chairman Tan Gee Paw of the Singapore Public Utilities Board, the conference featured research presentations covering six different countries and regions accompanied by a lively discussion and exchange about the future of water resources in Asia. Speakers included well-known experts from the United States, India, Thailand and Singapore.
