Seminar Report: “Understanding Okinawa’s Current Base Referendum Effort: A Comparison with Previous Plebiscites to Challenge State Authority”

On Wednesday, November 14, the “RCAPS Onigiri Seminar” entitled “Understanding Okinawa’s Current Base Referendum Effort: A Comparison with Previous Plebiscites to Challenge State Authority” was delivered by Dr. Robert Eldridge, President of The Eldridge Think Tank.

[Report by Professor SATO Yoichiro (APS) as the Seminar Organizer]

The seminar attracted 4 faculty members from International Relations and 7 graduate and undergraduate students across several disciplines. The Q&A session had enough time, and discussion was interactive. Comments by faculty members of the International Relations were both critical and successful in eliciting deeper responses from the speaker, and the exchanges gave a good sense of what academics do to those students who may be considering further postgraduate study or practice in diplomacy/security policy.

The speaker has previously been to APU twice, including teaching one winter session course, and is fond of academic rigor of APU. The speaker expressed his keen interest in co-organizing a policy seminar/forum.
