Many small- and mid-sized companies in Kyushu have useful technology and knowledge for environmental business like pollution control, energy-efficient products, and recycling. However, they lack the human resources needed to expand this technology and knowledge overseas – specifically, people who understand the culture, business customs, and laws about intellectual property rights in countries they want to expand into. This is happening despite the fact that there are many international students studying at universities in Kyushu who want to work in Japan and around the world after graduating. For these students, it is often difficult to get information about these small- and mid-sized companies.

The Kyushu Environmental Cluster University International Network Exchange Event is a forum to deepen the networks between students and small- and mid-size environmental companies that are expanding overseas. It will feature seminars by managers and foreign employees of companies around Kyushu, and will provide students with knowledge about what the companies are like and help them gain a better understanding of intellectual property rights – a key part of environmental business. There will also be an exchange event afterwards for students to interact with the company representatives.

We look forward to the participation of many international students who are interested in working for Japanese companies, and also welcome anybody from companies that are considering expanding their business overseas.

This This event will be held mostly in Japanese, but simultaneous English interpretation will be provided through receivers.

In 2008, former Prime Minister Fukuda announced a plan to double the amount of rice produced in Africa as part of Japan’s ODA. As Africa continues to face food shortages, improving the efficiency of rice production leads to less reliance on imported rice and creates income for farmers. This brings people out of poverty, gives children a chance to go to school, and results in many other positive ripple effects.

This seminar will feature a message from Mr. Tsuboi Tatsushi, a JICA Expert currently active on the frontlines of aid in Africa. Originally from nearby Kitsuki City, Mr. Tsuboi (whose nickname is “Mr. NERICA”) will introduce the latest data and examples of activities being done in Africa to spread efficient rice production methods.

*NERICA: Abbreviation of “New Rice for Africa”, a newly developed method of cultivation suitable for Africa.
