FY2019 JSPS Research Fellowships for Young Scientists Call for Applications

Under the Research Fellowship for Young Scientists program, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) selects and gives research support to PhD students and PhD graduates with superior research abilities who wish to pursue research at universities. *JDS Fellows cannot apply to be JSPS Fellows.

1. Application Categories

1. DC1 (1st year PhD students)

Stipend 200,000 yen/month (before tax)
Period April 1, 2019 - March 31, 2022 (3 years)
Application open to Students who will be 1st year PhD students (enrolled for less than 12 months) as of April 1, 2019.

2. DC2 (2nd or 3rd year PhD students)

Stipend 200,000 yen/month (before tax)
Period April 1, 2019 - March 31, 2021 (2 years)
Application open to Students who will be 2nd or 3rd year PhD students (enrolled for 12 – 36 months) as of April 1, 2019.

JSPS Fellows can also apply for a Grant-in-Aid (in a category tied to the Research Fellowship for Young Scientists) to conduct their proposed research. They can receive up to 1.5 million yen per year for research after going through the application and screening process.

Research stipend amounts are subject to change.

JSPS’ web site provides further information on application categories for those who have Japanese citizenship or permanent residence and already hold a doctoral degree.

2. How to Apply

Application is through JSPS’ own electronic application system. The application consists of two parts: the application information (biographical details entered in the electronic application system) and the application content file (the research proposal uploaded to the electronic application system). The application information must be filled out in Japanese. Your research supervisor must also submit an evaluation in the electronic application system on your behalf.

The Research Office offers assistance with using the electronic application system. If you would like assistance, please contact the Research Office in advance for an appointment.

*Current APU students who will be enrolling in another university for their PhD program and who wish to apply for DC2 should apply through their new university.

The application schedule is as follows. Applicants should follow the steps below to complete their applications and observe all deadlines.
