Title | ODA (Official Development Assistance) vs. ODA (Our Development Alternative) |
Abstract | In the wake of the victory of the free market economy, international society seems to have formed the premature consensus that the development is all about economic prosperity. In line with such an ideology, \'Development and Aid\' undermines traditional human relationships among families and communities in developing countries and leaves them in confusion and deadlock even in the economic realms, in spite of good intentions and the \'invisible hand\'-driven economy. Therefore, NGOs should seek for an alternative way to protect the traditional values of local communities, including human dignity and the sense of ownership of their destiny. However, don\'t NGOs also create the consciousness of poverty among people, and hence subjugate them under the fierce global market system in the name of \'Development and Aid\'? The speaker, who is Korean, will talk about this topic from the broader perspective of the international \'Development and Aid\' regime, based on his nearly two decades of experience in the arenas of development and emergency relief mostly in Africa. |
