Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University is looking for faculty members to support new academic endeavors.
The positions available are shown below.

Asia Pacific Studies (APS)

Field Media Studies
Position

(1) Type of employment: Fixed-term faculty member (tenure track, under age 65 at the time of appointment)
Position: Assistant Professor, Associate Professor

(2) Type of employment: Tenured faculty member
Position: Associate Professor

* Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University operates an assistant professor system as a position for development for those employed as faculty members shortly after
obtaining a PhD or directly before obtaining a PhD. After being appointed as an Assistant Professor, internal reviews will be conducted regarding achievements in
areas such as teaching and research. If the screening conditions are met according to university regulations following the review, the candidate will be promoted to the position of Fixed-term Associate Professor. As the Tenure Track System applies to the Fixed-term Associate Professor position, position changes to a tenured faculty member are possible in accordance with the [Tenure Track System] described below.
* The type of employment and position will depend on teaching and research achievements and work history. The candidate will be notified of the type of employment and position when the hiring decision is made.

Courses to be Taught, etc.

(1) Language of instruction for subjects to teach:
English (E). Ability to teach in Japanese (J) is an asset.

(2) Subjects to teach:
The successful candidate will be expected to teach the undergraduate course “Introduction to Media Studies” in English. They will also be responsible for teaching at least two of the following courses primarily in English within the Culture, Society, and Media (CSM) cluster: “New Media and Society”, “AI and Society”, and “Media Production Lab”. It is preferable that the candidate can also teach in Japanese.

*The candidate may also be asked to teach graduate school subjects, which are all taught in English.
*Depending on the candidate’s knowledge and experience, they may be asked to teach subjects other than those listed above.

Field International Relations (International Political Economy)
Position

(1) Type of employment: Fixed-term faculty member (tenure track, under age 65 at the time of appointment)
Position: Associate Professor, Professor

(2) Type of employment: Tenured faculty member
Position: Associate Professor, Professor

*The type of employment and position will depend on teaching and research achievements and work history. The candidate will be notified of the type of employment and position when the hiring decision is made.

Courses to be Taught, etc.

(1) Language of instruction for subjects to teach:
Japanese (J), English (E)

(2) Subjects to teach:
The successful candidate will teach the undergraduate courses “Introduction to Comparative Politics” and “Introduction to Political Science” in both Japanese and English. They will also be responsible for teaching at least two courses in the International Relations (IR) field, such as “International Political Economy”, “Regional Systems in the Asia Pacific”, “Globalization and Regionalism”, “International Conflict Resolution”, and “Violence and Terrorism”, in either Japanese or English.

Field Area Studies
Position

(1) Type of employment: Fixed-term faculty member (tenure track, under age 65 at the time of appointment)
Position: Associate Professor, Professor

(2) Subjects to teach:
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in “Area Studies” and “Introduction to Area Studies” in both Japanese and English, and will be responsible for teaching at least two courses from the CSM field, including “Ethnicity and the Nation State” and “Research Methods”, in both Japanese and English. The faculty member will also be in charge of the off-campus program “Advanced Area Studies”.

*The candidate may also be asked to teach graduate school subjects, which are all taughtin English.
*Depending on the candidate’s knowledge and experience, they may be asked to teach subjects other than those listed above.

Education Development and Learning Support Center (EDLSC)

Field Intercultural Understanding and International Education
Position

Type of Employment: Fixed-term faculty member
Position: Assistant Professor

After being appointed as an Assistant Professor, internal reviews will be conducted regarding achievements in areas such as teaching and research. As the Tenure Track System applies to the Fixed-term Associate Professor position, position changes to a tenured faculty member are possible in accordance with the below.

[Tenure Track System]
Fixed-term faculty members hired under the APU tenure-track system are subject to an internal review of their performance in education, research, and university administration around the third year after their appointment. As a result of the review, if the faculty member meets the review criteria in accordance with university regulations, their position type will be changed to a tenured position until retirement under a new contract.

English (E) and Japanese (J), or English (E)

(2) Subjects to teach:
The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and external provision of intercultural and multicultural co-curricular education, global education, first-year education, and leadership education. The candidate is expected to possess advanced practical skills in innovative educational practice informed by global trends in higher education, as well as expertise in competency-based education and the ability to implement and deliver such practices both within and outside the university. The ability to teach in both Japanese and English, or at least in English, is desirable.

Field Social Engagement Field
Position

Type of Employment: Fixed-term faculty member
Position: Assistant Professor
For a total of five years, including the duration of the MEXT Social Impact Initiative project and one year following its completion.

Courses to be Taught, etc.

(1) Language of instruction for subjects to teach:
Courses will be primarily taught in Japanese (J). The ability to teach in English (E) is also desirable.

(2) Subjects to teach:
The successful candidate will be responsible for facilitating collaboration between APU and universities, local governments, companies, and alumni in STEAM-related fields as part of the university’s social impact initiatives. They will also engage in problem-solving programs and support lifelong learning. Depending on their qualifications and background, the faculty member may also be assigned to teach multicultural collaboration workshops, student success workshops, global leadership courses, as well as career education, academic advising, and FD/SD.
