Governor of Oita Prefecture
Mr. HIROSE Katsusada
Let me begin by congratulating all of you on your entrance to this esteemed institution, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University. A warm welcome not only to students joining the university from within Japan, but also to those who have come from other countries and regions around the world.
I also extend my heartfelt congratulations to all family members who have supported the new students in their journeys up to this special day.
Since opening in April 2000, APU has recorded many outstanding achievements as a leader in the globalization of higher education in Japan. In June this year, APU was listed for the first time in the World University Rankings published by the international higher education evaluation body QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), and it ranked fifth among all private universities in Japan. This is one example of how APU is held in high regard both within Japan and internationally, making it an institution that the whole of Oita Prefecture can be proud of. APU has also been a constant supporter of internationalization and revitalization in Oita Prefecture. It opens its doors to the local community, pursues activities that assist intercultural understanding and English language education in elementary and junior high schools, and participates actively in local events. Moreover, APU plans to open the new College of Sustainability and Tourism in April 2023. I anticipate that this will not only expand learning opportunities but also enable APU graduates to flourish in new fields of activity.
As border restrictions ease, the APU campus is regaining its dynamic global atmosphere. As students of this university, which is firmly grounded in the local community while pursuing a global agenda, you will live and study in a multicultural community with peers from around 90 different countries and regions. You will surely learn a great variety of things from this experience, including international mutual understanding oriented to the realization of dreams and aspirations, a vision for the future and insights into the challenges it poses, the skills of flexible thinking and problem solving, and a capacity to collaborate with numerous peers. I am convinced that these will be precious attributes for you as individuals, as well as your home countries and regions.
Oita Prefecture is blessed with an abundant natural environment, a fascinating history and culture, and many delicious foods. I hope that all of you entering APU today will experience our prefecture’s attractions to the fullest, engage proactively with local residents in communities across the prefecture, and lead a rewarding student life. I also hope you will treat Oita as your adopted home, and build bridges between people, between regions, and between Oita and the world.
I wish you every success in your future endeavors, and pray for the continued success of Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University. Congratulations to you all.
Mayor of Beppu City
Mr. NAGANO Yasuhiro
Let me say congratulations to all the new students admitted to the Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University. On behalf of the citizens of Beppu, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all of you.
Since its opening, APU has earned a strong reputation as an international university open to local communities, and has produced many outstanding individuals who have changed the world by creating a unique "Global Learning Community" that takes into account APU's distinctive learning.
Three years have passed since our battle against the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, we have learned, devised, and moved forward in many ways. And finally, the international campus is coming back to life.
Welcome to Beppu. We sincerely welcome you.
APU is entering a new stage in its development, with the establishment of the Faculty of Sustainability and Tourism scheduled for spring 2023. It is expected that APU will further improve the environment for students to acquire the qualities essential for practical skills in each field. You will not only be exposed to diverse cultures and languages, but also be asked how you can contribute your experiences to the formation of society and local communities.
Beppu citizens are not afraid to try new things, and their daily lives are full of fun and charm. Perhaps because of this, many APU students feel that Beppu is their second home, and an increasing number of them stay in Beppu even after graduation. Your wisdom and young power are necessary for the development of this city. I hope we can work together to create a lively Beppu that attracts people from all over the world.
Last but not least, I would like to offer my best wishes for the further development of Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University and for the health and happiness of its students and all those involved.
During orientation, important information about studying at APU (curriculum, course registration, grading, etc.) as well as leading a physically and mentally healthy student life will be provided during the guidance sessions.
