Special Lecture by Japanese Ambassador to Luxembourg, H.E. Takashi SUETSUNA

Jan 30, 2012

On Monday, January 16, 2012, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, H.E. Takashi SUETSUNA visited APU and delivered a special lecture to an audience of graduate school students as part of APS Professor FUJIMURA Kazuhiro’s “International Relations in the Asia Pacific FA” paper.

Under the title of “Luxembourg, the EU and Japan (Asia)”, Ambassador SUETSUNA spoke about the capabilities of Luxembourg and its relationships with Japan (Asia), and the European Union (EU). On the topic of the current crisis facing the EU economy and the debt problems facing nations across Europe, Ambassador SUETSUNA stated that “As Greece approaches a round of massive debt repayments in March we can foresee some big changes ahead for the EU including the possibility of Greece exiting the EU. What unfolds in the EU will have a great impact on the rest of the global economy and we need to keep a close eye on future developments”.

A number of students from Europe attended the lecture and asked questions about how their nations should maintain a balance between national interests and the interests of the entire EU. In response Ambassador SUETSUNA stated that “this issue needs to be approached not only from an economic perspective, but also politically, culturally, and other perspectives”.

Born in Beppu City, Ambassador SUETSUNA entered the National Police Agency (NPA) in 1974 before serving as the Metropolitan Police Department Deputy Superintendent General and later the Grand Chamberlain of the Crown Prince at the Imperial Household Agency before assuming his current position as the Ambassador of Japan to Luxembourg in April, 2009. This visit to APU came about following the Ambassador’s attendance at a conference of European Ambassadors in Tokyo and his subsequent trip home to Beppu following the meeting.

This lecture was held as part of APU’s Guest Lecture Series.
