Japan and Pacific Anthropology: Some Ideas for New Research

Volume 3 Number 1, Spring 2012 pp. 6-17(12)

Hendry, Joy
Based on an idea that has been forming itself in the consciousness of the author for some 40 years, this paper raises several possible areas for future research that could relocate the study of Japan comparatively within a broader Pacific cultural zone. Examples are offered from language, both direct and indirect, including the use of politeness, protocol and material culture such as gifts, masks and tattoos; from conceptions and constructions of houses and family and from ideas of religion and spirituality, all set in the context of “an understanding of Moana or Mother Ocean that has provided sustenance since time immemorial for the people of the Pacific.”
