Developed countries have a long tradition of credit information sharing. In many developing countries, such as Vietnam, though, this is a relatively new activity. The development of credit information bureaus depends upon a great number of factors. Among these, the Vietnam credit bureau needs to improve data availability and quality, human resources skills and especially customer awareness. By using unique data from a survey of 263 small and medium enterprise (SME) owners, this study provides an evaluation of the performance of the Vietnam Credit Information Center (CIC), and perceptions and attitudes of customers on credit information sharing activities. The results suggest that customer knowledge of the function of Vietnam credit information bureaus in the credit granting process was restricted, and made borrowers not pay attention to repaying loans on time. Yet, borrowers have a positive attitude toward credit information sharing activities, which implies advantages for developing information sharing practices in the Vietnam credit market.
