These days the responsibility for the computer and the software that protects it is falling more and more on individual users, so the risks of computers becoming infected is increasing. To protect your computer, avoid danger, and prevent infection to other computers, please be sure to take the preventative measures shown below.

How can I avoid getting a virus?

It is very important to make sure your computer has the latest security installed and to update your OS periodically. Windows users should use Microsoft Windows Update and Mac users should use Apple Software Update.

Windows 10

To ensure effective antivirus protection, we recommend you use Windows Defender. Windows Defender has the same functions as McAfee VirusScan, and it is built into the Windows OS. Because of this, any future problems can also be addressed through Windows Update.

Windows 8.1

To ensure effective antivirus protection, we recommend you use Windows Defender. Windows Defender has the same functions as McAfee VirusScan, and it is built into the Windows OS. Because of this, any future problems can also be addressed through Windows Update.

Mac OS

Antivirus Software for Mac OS is not fully integrated into the OS like Windows. Apple Corporation recommends users take the following measures to ensure antivirus protection. Please be sure to take the following steps after uninstalling McAfee VirusScan.

  • Update your OS
  • Only install applications from the Mac App Store
  • Do not open any suspicious file attachments
CHECK Let’s Take Preventative Measures

  • Install Antivirus software and update it periodically
  • Run an antivirus scan on any data you receive from other people
  • Don’t open unexpected or unknown attachments, even if the email was sent by a friend

End of McAfee VirusScan License Program

In the past, this university has shared licenses for antivirus software for Windows OS and Mac OS with our userbase (current students and faculty/staff). When our contract with McAfee expired, as of March 31, 2018 APU has stopped offering McAfee VirusScan licenses. If you are using a copy of McAfee VirusScan downloaded from our website, please make sure you uninstall it as of March 31, 2018. If you continue to use this license after April 1, 2018 you will be in violation of the license agreement. Each individual user is responsible for ensuring the validity of their McAfee VirusScan license, so please be sure not to violate the license agreement. Anti-malware software is now included by default in the latest versions of Windows OS and Mac OS available from their respective companies. Going forward, please use this default software or purchase and install your own anti-malware software.
