On April 30, the Self Access Learning Centre (SALC) hosted a Sip and Paint event during fifth period, giving students an opportunity to relax, be creative, and connect outside the classroom. The event forms part of SALC’s ongoing efforts to create informal spaces for language use, creativity, and intercultural exchange.

The seventy-minute session brought together twenty-six participants from College of International Management (APM) , College of Asia Pacific Studies (APS), and College of Sustainability of Tourism(ST), with students representing more than fifteen countries. The small group setting encouraged conversation and helped participants feel comfortable sharing ideas and interacting with one another.

During the session, the participants followed a guided painting activity while adding their own personal touches to their work and enjoying a selection of international beverages. As they painted, conversations developed naturally, creating a lively and relaxed atmosphere.

One of the most memorable moments came at the end of the session when students revealed their paintings to their partners. After spending nearly an hour talking while painting, many participants felt nervous about showing their artwork. However, once the paintings were revealed, the atmosphere quickly shifted into laughter and excitement. In one case, a pair even exchanged their paintings as gifts. It was a simple moment that captured the spirit of the event.

Kai Taguchi, a first-year ST student from Japan, described the event as “a very relaxing and enjoyable experience.” He explained, “I attended the event because I enjoy drawing and wanted to connect with new people. It was my first time painting while socialising, and I found it very enjoyable. I met both familiar and new people, and I had a great time. I would love to join more SALC events.”

Ulfat Sabiha Sabi reflected, “Who knew painting with a timer could still be relaxing? I had an amazing time, although my paintings were not very amazing. I cannot wait for more events like this.”

Adilah Zabia, a first-year APM student from Bangladesh, initially had difficulty locating the SALC but was able to attend after receiving a map pin. She later shared, “I attended the event because I wanted to start painting again and make new friends. I wanted to have fun, and I definitely did. It was wonderful meeting new people and painting together.”

By the end of the session, participants left not only with artwork but also with new friendships and shared experiences. The event reflects SALC’s continued commitment to fostering creativity, interaction, and community beyond the classroom.
