Shape your World - APU Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University

In 2025, APU celebrated its 25th anniversary since its founding.
To mark this occasion, we are launching the "Campus Art Gallery Initiative" in an effort to adorn the entire campus with art.

Why Art at APU?

To Express What Makes APU, APU!

Art reveals "how an individual sees the world." Within it, we often find questions raised about the "common sense" we unconsciously accept, as well as the contradictions and discomforts hidden in society.

Creating art is an act of earnestly observing the world.
Viewing art is an act of rediscovering the world.

We sense in art an inclusive power that embraces the "uniqueness of each individual," a quality that should be fundamentally valued.

This openness of art resonates deeply with the spirit of APU. APU is home to rich diversity in nationality, culture, language, and more. We aim to cultivate this environment where diversity thrives even further, striving to be a university that respects all forms of difference—including nationality, ethnicity, religion, ideology, social attributes, disability, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and age—and transforms them into strengths.

Therefore, we wish to create and share art—which lacks a common language and has no fixed correct answers—together with our students and the local community.
It is with the hope that every single difference is valued, and that these very differences enrich our world,
that the Campus Art Gallery Initiative has begun.

The Power of Art

Art also provides a space to cultivate the ability to "think and formulate hypotheses" when facing questions without definitive answers.
The act of engaging with an artwork and attempting to derive one's own interpretation hones our thinking, imagination, and capacity to find personal meaning.

Artists are individuals who do not fear stepping outside the "ordinary" and who sincerely confront their own questions. The output born from this attitude offers us unique stimulation and insights that cannot be gained elsewhere.
