1948年に故郷を離れて以来、苦難の道をたどったパレスチナ人たちの短編・中編小説集である。著者のカナファーニー自身パレスチナ人で、パレスチナ解放運動に加わり、1972年に暗殺されている。本書はアラビア語で書かれた彼の作品の中から訳者が選んで1978年に出版した単行本の文庫版である。「太陽の男たち」はパレスチナからクウエートに逃れて生活の困難を打開しようとした男たちの悲劇である。「ハイファに戻って」は、ポーランドからパレスチナの地に安住の地を求めたユダヤ人と、ハイファを追われて20年後にやっとの思いで戻ってきたパレスチナ人との対話を中心とした中編である。現在のパレスチナ問題を知るためには、1948年からこれまでこの地で何があったのかを知っておいた方が良い。

This is an autobiography of a former child soldier in Sierra Leone, West Africa. He was caught by a guerrilla when he was 12 years old in 1992. Then, he was brainwashed and trained as a soldier. He was engaged in battles with a gun for three years. UNICEF secured him when he was 15. However, the rehabilitation process was painstaking. The capital, Freetown, where he escaped, became a battle ground, so that he finally run away from the country to the US via Guinea. His story is his own. However, that reflects agonies given to a million of child soldiers in the world.

カラシニコフとは旧ソ連の技師であったカラシニコフ氏が1947年に開発した自動小銃の名称である。中でもAK47が世界で広く用いられている。この銃は、その後に開発された自動小銃よりも高温多湿などの環境に順応度が高く、分解して組み立て可能な特徴に勝れていて、現在も世界の紛争地で用いられている。子どもでも扱えることから、児童兵が広く使用している。朝日新聞記者だった松本仁一は、カラシニコフが用いられている紛争地や、カラシニコフ氏自身をも訪問して、このマシンガンと共にある人々に柔らかなまなざしを向ける。

Svetlana Alexievich was born in 1948 in Ukraine and raised in Belarus. She interviewed a number of former Russian female soldiers, and complied them in this book. Even though some of them were engaged in killing, their humanity came up from time to time in war zones. It sounds that the humanism is so basic and unable to be uprooted even in the battlefield. With this book as her memorable work, Alexievich attained the Noble Prise in Literature in 2015.

「さらば、わが愛　覇王別姫」などで知られる中国人映画監督、陳凱歌の回顧録である。陳が14歳のころ文化大革命が起こり、陳は毛沢東を取り巻く紅衛兵となる。紅衛兵として暴力をふるい、公衆の前で父親さえ批判・罵倒した。1969年には雲南省に「下放」され、陳の青春時代は終わりを告げる。「中国版少年兵」としての実体験をつづった本書は、陳が書き下ろし、刈間文俊が和訳したものであるが、中国語版が出版されているのか、定かではない。
