It's a very ordinary detective story, far removed from anything glamorous. What makes this novel special is undoubtedly the way of life of the protagonist, Philip Marlowe, glimpsed beneath the sharp, incisive dialogue. It's difficult to explain in words, but this man is inconvenient for those obsessed with power, difficult for those who value recognition to understand, and annoying for those who rely on kindness. Of course, he's an unattainable figure for someone like me, who lives a shallow life.
