Five faculty members from CIL participated in the 2nd Inclusive Leadership Symposium held at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) on February 1–2, 2023. The participants included Associate Professor SHINOHARA Yoshiki, Director of CIL, Associate Professor ROUX Petrus Willem, Deputy Director of CIL, as well as Associate Professors OZAWA Tomoyuki, SAITO Hiroaki, and ACKARADEJRUANGSRI P. from the College of International Management.

Participated CIL faculty members are all CIL research project holders, and a joint session was held to showcase some of the research they are conducting.
An inclusive pedagogy is an approach that is student-centered and considers all students’ backgrounds, experiences, and learning variabilities. Following an introduction to work at APU, the session presented three educational interventions that aim to develop a more inclusive pedagogy for undergraduate education:

  1. (1) a project-based learning activity in a multicultural setting
  2. (2) practices of Diversity & Inclusion Teaching Assistants to support inclusive learning
  3. (3) a case study which fosters students’ understanding of inclusive leadership, social entrepreneurship and diversity and inclusion.

The overall aim was to consider some elements that might be important for developing an inclusive pedagogy in higher education.

An interactive Q&A was held during the CIL member’s session. Throughout the session, all participants gained a deeper understanding of inclusive pedagogy. Presenters also gained some useful feedback which can possibly contribute to their future research.
