This seminar took place as part of the “Spring 2018 RCAPS Current Research Seminar Series” where five APU faculty members who had been on Academic Develop Leave (ADL) in AY 2017 for the purpose of furthering research in or out of Japan and have since returned to present their research findings.
Professor MEIRMANOV conducted his research mainly in Kazakhstan during his ADL in spring 2017.
[Report by Professor MEIRMANOV Serik (APS)]
The Seminar Chair Associate Professor MAHICHI made a brief introduction of the speaker. The seminar was delivered using a combination of PowerPoint slides, short video material and a demonstration of n-back working memory software. The contents of seminar are formed by the following three main parts:
1. An introduction of brain working memory and n-back test
2. An of Introduction Near InfraRed Spectrography (NIRS)
3. Presenting the research on working memory of Diabetes Mellitus patients
The total time of the presentation of approximately one hour and 15 minutes was followed by a 20-minute discussion which was facilitated by the seminar chair. Students asked questions regarding the possibility of improving memory, while also expressing interest in memorization techniques such as the mnemo-technique. There were also questions about the practical application of the research: how the results obtained from the DM type 2 patients can be applicable to DM type 1 patients.
In total there were more than 40 in the audience, including both undergraduate and graduate students. An APU faculty member, Dr. WROBLEWSKI Gregg, who has a PhD in the area of neuroscience, also kindly attended in this seminar.
My appreciation goes towards the seminar chair, Associate Professor MAHICHI for her kind assistance as well as to all RCAPS members for their support in organizing the seminar.
