Founded in April 2000, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) is proud to celebrate its silver jubilee. From the beginning, APU has received tremendous support from Oita Prefecture, Beppu City, the business community, and a wide range of individuals and organizations in Japan and abroad. I believe that the founding of such a pioneering international university—unprecedented in its concept—was only made possible in Beppu, an international tourist city known for its openness and hospitality. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the people of Oita and Beppu for warmly welcoming and continuously supporting APU.

APU is Japan’s most globally diverse university, characterized by international students accounting for half of its student body, non-Japanese faculty accounting for half of its faculty body, and the use of both Japanese and English as official languages. Since its founding, APU has welcomed students from 169 countries and regions, fostering an unparalleled multicultural environment that embraces a wide array of cultural and social backgrounds.

Looking toward the future, APU has laid out its vision for 2030 under the slogan "APU Graduates Possess the Power to Change the World." We are committed to cultivating individuals who, grounded in APU’s diverse and inclusive learning environment, will go on to collaborate across borders, create new value, and lead the transformation toward a better society.

At COP29, the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, several APU alumni participated and engaged in meaningful discussions on global challenges from their respective nations or international organizations. They sent us pictures of their impromptu alumni meetings during recess, and we shared those pictures in real-time at APU. Witnessing our graduates take part in addressing such crucial issues on a global scale filled me with pride and admiration. Many of our alumni have already begun to fulfill the promise of becoming changemakers in the world.

Today, our world continues to face conflict and instability, with the international order under severe threat. Global issues such as climate change, environmental degradation, and poverty remain urgent and unresolved. I sincerely hope that APU alumni taking leadership roles around the world will work together with like-minded people across cultures and borders to bring the world closer to peace, sustainability, and happiness.

We at APU are committed to continuing to build a forward-looking university for the 21st century, supported and encouraged by its more than 25,000 APU graduates worldwide, our current students and their families, local communities, and all those who have supported our journey. We sincerely appreciate your continued support for APU and all that we strive to achieve.
