1. CONFERENCE THEME

"Ethics, Human Security and Sustainability: Knowledge and Practices in Asia Pacific"

Date November 1 (Sat) – November 3 (Mon), 2014
Conference Theme Ethics, Human Security and Sustainability: Knowledge and Practices in Asia Pacific
Place Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU)
1-1 Jumonjibaru, Beppu, Oita, Japan

Themes/Topics:

Human security and sustainability are pressing concerns in the Asia Pacific Region in the light of the threats of climate change, pressures from globalization, persistent poverty, environmental degradation, natural risks and disasters, internal conflicts, population dynamics, economic uncertainties and political tensions. Addressing human security and sustainability inevitably involves some ethical questions involving justice, equity, and the value of life, culture, and environment. Without human security, sustainability is not possible. Without addressing ethical questions, choices made for human security or sustainability lack legitimacy. Only by including ethical considerations can we generate a complete understanding of the theories and practices that govern sustainability and human security.

How are communities and nations responding to the various forces and threats to human security and sustainability? What knowledge and experiences exist to guide policy-makers and development advocates in advancing the goals of human security and sustainability in the Region? What is the role of ethics in promoting human security and sustainability? How can ethics be employed to advance human security and sustainability?
