Program: (APS) Disability and Society
Instructor: YAMAGATA Tatsufumi
Reasons for Participating in the Program

The reason I applied for this program is because I wanted to learn firsthand how people with disabilities are accepted within society and live together with others. In my country, I felt that disability is often created not by the body itself, but by society’s attitudes and ways of interacting. I myself used to immediately try to help when I saw people with disabilities, but I realized that this is not always the right kind of kindness. Kindness without understanding can sometimes hurt the other person. I was deeply moved by the philosophy of Taiyo no Ie, “No charity, but a chance,” and wanted to experience and learn this philosophy in practice at the actual site. In addition, I heard a great deal about Professor Tatsufumi Yamagata’s warmth and patient guidance from my seniors and graduate student friends, and this also became a major motivation for applying.

How the Program Helped You Grow

Through this field study, I learned that inclusion does not mean sympathy, but giving equal opportunities to everyone. Seeing the people working at Taiyo no Ie face their work with confidence and pride greatly changed the way I think about work and life. I realized that work is not merely a means of earning income, but a meaningful space to realize one’s value as a member of society. I would like to apply this experience to my future studies in management and aim to create workplaces where everyone is respected and has fair opportunities to grow. In addition, by observing how Professor Tatsufumi Yamagata stays close to each student and supports them warmly, I also gained valuable insights into the essence of leadership.

Message for Students Interested in The Program

If you have even a little interest in this program, I strongly encourage you to participate. This experience will greatly broaden your mind and perspective. You will gain not only knowledge, but also compassion, courage, and the importance of understanding others. My time at Taiyo no Ie offered me a new perspective on society and the meaning of “work,” and also contributed to my own personal growth. Above all, Professor Tatsufumi Yamagata consistently supported each student warmly and patiently. I believe that his presence made this program truly special and unforgettable.
