Experiences unique to your host country/university
The exchange program in Zagreb, Croatia, provided me with the great experience of getting outside of my comfort zone. In Zagreb, over 90% of the people I met day to day were Europeans. On certain occasions, I was the only Asian person. As such, I experienced barriers that most of us would never face in Japan. I learned the importance of staying positive and continuing to challenge yourself, no matter how tough the situation is. It allowed me to see things from different perspectives and appreciate where I belong.
In Croatia, you have access to all kinds of European cuisine at a very affordable price. You don’t have to worry about high food expenses because they have the best food at the best price. There’s a restaurant called “Noturno” in downtown Zagreb where you can have pizza or risotto, etc. for only around 600 yen.
Zagreb has one of the best Christmas markets in Europe. The whole city will light up and is filled with the Christmas spirit. Moreover, the world’s first ‘Hangover Museum’ and ‘Museum of Broken Relationships’ are located in Zagreb, Croatia. Once a year, the doors of Zagreb’s museums and galleries will open free of charge. The one and only Plitvice Lake National Park also provides a stunning and special experience. Last but not least, if you go to the old town of Dubrovnik, it feels like you’re inside a Ghibli movie or the set of “Game of Thrones”.
Words of advice/encouragement for students who want to go on exchange in the future.
Make use of this chance to go on exchange, take classes, and travel with few worries and without paying extra tuition. Sometimes we just need to give ourselves a little push to get out of our comfort zone. Take one step out of your comfort zone and you won’t regret it!
