Experiences unique to your host country/university
Australia has a very open and honest society. Many Australians like to be outspoken and have fun, which is perfect if you like the party scene. Australians like to have barbeques and drink. For example, on weekends, if you go to a hardware store called “Bunnings”, you will be able to get a fresh hotdog (and snacks) for free! Australia also embraces many cultures. You will definitely be able to find a home for yourself in Australia. Whether you are Japanese, Thai, or Indonesian, you will find something to soothe your homesickness. Other than that, Australians also love the local wildlife. There wasn’t a lot of wildlife in Melbourne, but if you go to Phillip Island you’ll find many wonderful animals.
Australia’s education system is also different from Japan. They have 2 types of classes: lectures and tutorials. Lectures are always recorded and held in a big auditorium while tutorials/workshops are held in a smaller classroom to help students understand the subject better. Tutorials/workshops make studying a lot easier because the smaller class size allowed me to get to know my classmates and my tutor as well.
Words of advice/encouragement for students who want to go on exchange in the future.
Do it! Don’t be scared of the cultural differences. You will adapt and you will survive. Ultimately, you will gain the experience of a lifetime. The world is a big place, and going on exchange is one of the better ways to explore it.
