Reason Why You Decided to Apply
I wanted to join an overseas program not only to learn the language, but also to do survey and research. That’s why I applied for this program. Although I didn’t have much confidence in my language skills, I wanted to become more active in expressing my opinions when I do group work with international students at APU. Therefore, I decided to take on a challenge I have never tried before.
Unlike high school trips, this program requires us to decide what to eat and where to stay during the practicum, which I found particularly interesting.
How the Program Helped You Grow
Since nobody in my group had experience learning Korean, I learned communication beyond language. I realized that having the willingness to listen allowed me to understand what someone wants to convey - even if I don't understand their language. One unexpected area where I grew was my attitude toward English. When I met people who spoke English, I found myself thinking " I can speak English!” and I became more confident in using English.
Moreover, I noticed that I had an unconscious prejudice toward Korean people. Before the practicum, I was worried that many Koreans might dislike Japanese people, and I feared having unpleasant experiences because of my nationality. However, in reality, most people treated us very kindly - not as Japanese, but simply as fellow human beings. Through this experience, I have come to realize the importance of interacting with people from various nationalities and backgrounds as individuals, without prejudice.
Message for Students Interested in The Program
I especially recommend this program to those who are not confident in their language skills, such as English or Korean. Although this program includes many “first”-time experiences and things you might feel challenging or beyond your comfort zone, joining right after entering university will help you get used to taking on challenges without hesitation and build your confidence. Also, for those who feel nervous about group work, you can feel reassured because this program provides thorough pre- and post-program classes in addition to the on-site fieldwork. As your “FIRST” step at APU, I encourage you to join FIRST and take on the challenge!
