Reasons for Participating in the Program
The primary reason for my participation in this program was my strong desire to gain not only academic but also practical knowledge regarding regional revitalization and the role of tourism. As an Environmental Studies major in APS, I applied in order to further explore how sustainable communities can be developed while carefully preserving valuable local resources, and to examine how tourism can be both balanced with and actively promoted alongside these community efforts. I believed that Okinawa, with its rich natural environment, profound history, and unique culture, provided an ideal setting to learn through direct communication with local residents.
How the Program Helped You Grow
By attending lectures delivered by community members and engaging in homestays, I came to recognize that the most essential aspect is developing a thorough understanding of the community and its values. I was particularly struck by the importance that local residents place on both the natural environment and interpersonal connections. Moving forward, whether initiating new activities or negotiating with external organizations and individuals, I intend to place great importance on respecting the perspectives and values held by all parties involved. Even without forming deeply personal relationships, I concluded that fostering an increase in the so-called “related population”—people who show even a modest interest in a community or issue—will become increasingly vital.
Message for Students Interested in The Program
The experience gave me plenty of opportunities to interact with local residents and to spend time in ways that are truly unique and otherwise unattainable. Being immersed in Okinawa’s natural environment and the warmth of its people also prompted me to reflect upon my own values and way of life. This experience not only deepened my academic learning but also encouraged me to consider how I wish to engage in future activities both within and beyond the university. Ultimately, it was a valuable opportunity that highlighted the abundance of important resources embedded within everyday life. I strongly recommend participation to those who hold even the slightest interest.
