Experiences unique to your host country/university
The tastes that I experienced for the first time, the buildings that I had never seen, and an unfamiliar language. I was able to experience many firsts in Morocco thanks to the APU Exchange Program. In particular, I was able to learn many things by volunteering as a Japanese teacher for local students. I planned and operated a club for the local students to exchange letters with Japanese speakers with the aim of learning each other’s language and culture. I often thought that, even if one comes to the club with pre-existing knowledge on grammar and culture, questions may still arise from unexpected perspectives or differences in cultures. When recruiting Japanese speakers, I reached out to my friends, friends of my friends, and then friends of those friends. I wanted the local learners in Morocco to exchange letters with Japanese speakers living all over the world! As a result, I believe I was able to create an opportunity for Japanese speakers around the world to feel a closer connection with Morocco. I believe this volunteer experience, where I was able to deepen the exchange between local Japanese language learners in Morocco and Japanese speakers around the world, is one of the most treasured experiences of my life.
