Program: (ST) Creating sustainable regions: Survey in Iida City, Nagano Prefecture
Instructor: TSUCHIHASHI Takuya
Reasons for Participating in the Program
I participated in the field study in Iida City, Nagano Prefecture, because I wanted to obtain insight into how to solve problems through field research based on the awareness of issues I had during my studies at APU. My major is environment and development studies, so I thought that Iida City, which is creating a virtuous cycle between the environment and the economy, would be a very helpful role model. I also wanted to experience what it is like to conduct field research in the field, since most of my previous learning through lectures had been completed on campus.
How the Program Helped You Grow
The program provided an opportunity to look at a wide range of fields besides environmental policies, such as civic activities and cultural heritage. Through the cross-disciplinary program, we were able to gain an essential understanding of the state of Iida City as we asked and demonstrated our own questions. In the future, I would like to apply the learning and awareness of issues I gained in Iida City in my graduation research at the Environment and Development Studies Seminar and at the company where I work, which is engaged in environmental projects.
Message for Students Interested in The Program
This program is suitable for those who seek active learning, not passive learning at a desk, but those who have their own questions and awareness of issues and are willing to go out and grab the answers and hints on their own. You will learn how to think deeply based on the information you gain, rather than just listening to stories and observing onsite. It will be a good opportunity to think about "sustainability" in a wide range of fields through "urban development" in Iida City. In addition, since students from several universities will be participating, it will be very stimulating to meet people with very different interests, ways of thinking, and previous experiences.
