Instructor: KIMURA Rikio
Reason Why You Decided to Apply
I took Professor Kimura's course on community development and learned that although the word “development” is often used, there are many different methods and ways of thinking. Among them, I learned that there is a way of thinking that focuses not on local “issues” but on local “strengths,” and I would like to apply it to the creation of local development plans. I also applied for the program because I thought there would be learning and insights to be gained not only by learning about how to interact and collaborate with local people, but also by putting them into practice.
What do you hope to gain from participating in the program and how will you apply it to your future undergraduate studies or career?
As someone who aspires to a career in the field of development cooperation in the future, I have learned a great deal in terms of how to perceive the region and my role as an outsider. I believe that these lessons were gained through the experience of going to the sites and talking with the people there in their own words. On the other hand, through working with other students from diverse backgrounds, I was reminded of the importance of trying to understand others. In the future, I would like to make use of what I have learned and get involved in development cooperation in developing countries.
Message for Students Interested in The Program
In this program, participants will make proposals for local development plans through “getting to know” Toho Village by interacting and discussing with villagers, experiencing the culture, and doing homestays. Therefore, this program is recommended for those who wish to put into practice what they have learned at APU in the field of development. It is also recommended for those who would like to experience life in Toho Village and interact with the local people and for those who would like to work together in a diverse team.
