Donation Ceremony Held for the Newly Inaugurated Kyushu Oil Labor Union STORK Scholarship

Oct 19, 2009

On Friday, October 9th APU welcomed 2 members of the former Kyushu Oil Labor Union to inaugurate the new Kyushu Oil Labor Union STORK Scholarship in a donation ceremony.

Vice Chairman of the former Kyushu Oil Labor Union's Central Executive Committee, ENDO Ken, addressed the gathering with the following comment: "When we dissolved the union, we examined how we could use the reserve fund accumulated by current and former members to give something back to society. The committee agreed unanimously to donate the funds to APU because of its commitment to cooperating with and contributing to the community. Please use these funds for scholarships and thank you for 10 years of support." SATO Keiichi, Chairman of the former Kyushu Oil Labor Union's Central Executive Committee, then presented a record of the funds to President Monte Cassim.

President Cassim thanked the union with a brief comment: "As APU approaches its 10th anniversary we are currently in deep discussion about the next 10 years. I am very grateful to receive these scholarship funds today. They are sure to help us undertake new initiatives. In these 10 years, student activities have started to shift from community exchange to more in-depth regional contribution. I would like to use this scholarship money to assist students who pursue regional contribution activities."

The Kyushu Oil Labor Union STORK Scholarship was created from a portion of the reserve funds accumulated by current and former union members of the former Kyushu Oil Labor Union which was dissolved when Kyushu Oil Co. Ltd. merged operations with Nippon Oil Corporation. The new fund will be used to assist APU students who are active in regional exchange and contribution activities. The scholarship will be used to develop human resources who can promote regional exchange and contribution activities and help revitalize the regional community. Funds will be dispersed to proactive students in this field.

Kyushu Oil Co. Ltd. was founded in 1960 with its primary refinery in the Tsurusaki district of Oita City. It ran STORK brand gasoline stations throughout Kyushu and Kanto, but since the merger with Nippon Oil Corporation in October 2008, the stations now run under the ENEOS brand name. While the company may no longer exist, the Kyushu Oil and STORK band names will live on as an APU scholarship.
