In addition to these two countries, APU is also actively engaged in the recruitment of international students from a wide range of countries and regions. We hope to further strengthen our efforts to attract students from the South-Pacific region in the future". In addition to international students, the President also touched on APU's acceptance of research trainees from a number of countries and the One Village, One Product research and tourism development training currently underway in cooperation with JICA. In response, H.E. Ambassador TAKASE talked of recent developments, "in the Kingdom of Tonga, Japanese language and `soroban' (a traditional Japanese abacus) lessons are held at the primary school level and there are many students who are keen to travel to Japan as exchange students. Furthermore, a number Tongan APU graduates have taken up important posts in the Tongan Government and are active as members of parliament."
To date, APU has accepted 8 students from the Kingdom of Tonga including 2 who are currently studying at the Graduate School (as of November 1, 2009). We look forward to welcoming even more students from Tongan and other South-Pacific nations and building even stronger cooperative relationships.
