On Friday, December 16, 2011, President of the International Court of Justice, Judge OWADA Hisashi, delivered a special lecture under the title of “Recent developments at the International Court of Justice”. This lecture was held as part of Professor YAKUSHIJI Kimio’s “International Law JA” paper.
Judge OWADA joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1955 and has held a number of important posts as the Director General of Treaties Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, and as an Ambassador to the United Nations. Following his resignation as vice-minister in 1999, he was elected a judge at the International Court of Justice in 2003 and assumed the Presidency of the Court in 2009 – the first for a Japanese citizen.
The venue was absolutely packed with students interested in international law and keen to take advantage of this rare opportunity to hear directly from the internationally-renowned Judge OWADA.
