Lecture by Mr. WADA Tomio, Ex-Deputy Director from the Central Institute of Sharp

Mar 1, 2006

A Management of Technology (MOT) Seminar for local Kyushu manufactures was held at APU Graduate School Building on January 11, 2006 under the support of Kyushu Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry, Oita Prefecture, Oita Branch of Development Bank of Japan, The Oita Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Kyushu Yamaguchi Industrial Club and Society of Fukuoka Machinery and Metal Corporations.
Kyushu has many leading business enterprises such as Canon, Toyota, Nippon Steel and Toshiba and they produce industrial clusters such as "Silicon Island" and "Car Island." Meanwhile, technical capability of "local businesses" and management methods are not well developed. Therefore, integrated development of "leading companies" and "local companies" through raising the standard of "local companies" by MOT seminars will be a major issue for the industrial economy in Kyushu.
This seminar aimed to vitalize manufacturing businesses in Kyushu by focusing on people related to the medium-sized manufacturing in Kyushu and having a management of technology which matches their needs.

Six professors from APU graduate schools were assigned to 2 venues and lectured on several topics such as "Creation of Environment Industry Market and MOT - Through the Comparison of Japan, China and Korea" and "Vitalization of Engineers in Medium-Sized Manufacturing." Also prior to these lectures, Tomio WADA, Ex-Deputy Director at the Central Institute of Sharp who was also featured in the NHK program, "Project X, Liquid Crystal, Battle of Obsession," visited APU and had a special lecture on "From the Creation of the Liquid Crystal Calculator to the Expansion of Plasma – 30 years with Liquid Crystal Displays." Mr. Wada talked about his experiences through his research on liquid crystal displays and his research development.

About 40 people including 26 APU students participated in the seminar and had some opinions and questions such as "Who could make Plasma besides Sharp?"
