Last night at about 23:37 on Tuesday June 20, an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 struck near Saiki City in the south of Oita Prefecture. Beppu City and APU experienced minor shaking of about 2 on the shindo scale.
APU has received no reports of damage or interruption of basic services in Beppu. The APU campus and facilities did not experience any damage, and there have been no reports of injuries from any students, faculty, or staff. Buses are operating normally, and classes are being held as usual.
Students at APU participate in disaster response drills every semester to ensure they are prepared in the event a natural disaster strikes. APU also provides students with an Emergency Disaster Response Handbook with clear explanations of how to prepare for and respond to earthquakes, storms, and fires, and other disasters.
