APU Student Wins All-Japan Collegiate Athletics Championships!

Sep 17, 2008

APU Women's Athletic Team Member WANJOHI Mary Wangari (APS4 Kenya) won the 5,000m race of the Emperor's Trophy 77th All-Japan Collegiate Athletics Championships in spectacular fashion. The Championships, which were held from 12 - 14 September at the National Stadium in Tokyo, produced amazing performances of athleticism and sheer determination.

In this championship the student athletes vie to be the best in Japan in the various events. In the women's 5000m 33 runners took part. Wangari, who is the current holder of the Japan Student Record at 15:13.09, was a top candidate for victory.

Wangari, who injured her leg in August, was only able to get in about a 1/3 of her normal practice and so was not at full strength. However, she strongly kept in mind that this was to be her last championships and showed her strength by placing herself in the leading group after the start, and pulled the race along from the front.
Ultimately, she beat her closest rival by a mere 1 second with a time of 15:56.33 to secure her third win. Furthermore, the 2nd and 3rd placed runners KOJIMA Kazue and TAKENAKA Risa, both of Ritsumeikan University, completed a podium full of Ritsumeikan runners.

3 other participants, other than Ms. Wangari, competed at this championship in the 1500m, 5000m, and 10,000m. MWANGI Mary Wachuka (APS4 Kenya) placed 9th in the 1500m with a time of 4:30.27

The APU Women's Athletic Team will not be resting on their laurels though, all the team members are back hard at work carrying out a grueling training schedule in order to prepare for the preliminary race to All-Japan Ekiden Athletics Meet (the Kyushu Road Race Titles). The team has competed at every All-Japan Ekiden Athletics Meet for the last 8 years and is aiming for a top placement at this years race. With the support and encouragement of every APU student the team will no doubt put in a performance that will make APU proud.
