RCAPS Seminar: Dr Dennis D. Trinidad (Associate professor, De La Salle University)

On 18 January 2013, RCAPS invited Dr Dennis D. Trinidad as a speaker for a seminar entitled, “China and Japan’s economic cooperation in Southeast Asia”. Dr. Dennis is an Associate Professor at De La Salle University, Manila. He is also involved in the Japan Institute of International Affairs as a Visiting Research Fellow.

Based on Dr Dennis’ explanation, China’s influence in Southeast Asia is becoming stronger, especially in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam (CLMV). This was demonstrated in July 2011, when the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting failed to formulate a Joint Statement on the South China Sea because of a dissenting opinion from Cambodia, which had been influenced by China.

Dr Dennis also explained that China imitates Japan’s strategy of establishing soft power by linking aid to trade and investment, and the amount is increasing. In contrast, Japan’s allocation on economic cooperation in the form of official development assistance (ODA) is declining. Those different patterns are caused by political and commercial aspects of both countries which led Japan to focus on innovation and diverse allocation while China more concentrates on market access and resource security.

The participation of audience members in the seminar emphasized and sharpened the explanation. All in all, through this seminar, we gained valuable knowledge from Dr Dennis about Japan and China’s economic cooperation.

This lecture was made possible through the invitation of APS Professor Yoshimatsu Hidetaka.
