Seminar Report; Copyright Seminar "Copyright in Education"
On Friday, October 14, 2016, Mr. Yugo Masuda of the Copyright Division of the Commissioner's Secretariat in the Agency of Cultural Affairs gave a seminar on the topic of "Copyright in Education." The seminar was held in Japanese with Japanese-to-English simultaneous interpretation.

This seminar aimed to assist writers of academic papers. Approximately twenty people attended, mainly faculty members and graduate students. Copyright is one form of intellectual property right and Mr. Masuda explained the definitions of copyrighted work and the requirements for determining something as copyrighted work according to the Copyright Act. He then went on to describe in detail the five key aspects of using copyright legally: whether or not the work is copyrighted, who the copyright holder is, what qualifies as a violation of copyright, how long the duration of copyright is, and ways for using copyrighted works. While covering these aspects, he responded to questions from the pre-seminar questionnaire and also presented examples of copyright-related cases that were upheld or struck down in court. The question and answer session featured many questions addressing common issues at universities, such as citing sources, copying materials, and advertising events, and continued for almost one hour after the end of the seminar.
