Speech Title
Globalization and localization in the view of history and human emotions
Although many of us realize that the flows of globalization are pervasive, we often do not speak of this in clearly defined terms. At the same time, human beings fear the unknown, and in particular an unknown future. As a result of this, we frequently experience reactions against these flows and the phenomena arising from them. Such reactions are sometimes referred to as protectionism or provincialism. But is it necessary to draw an either/or distinction between the global and the local? In this speech, I will suggest that we must put these points in order and that reflecting on history is one aspect of this process.
In the Asia Pacific Conference 2016, about 485 participants came from 20 different countries and regions. The conference is the largest conference held in English in Japan.
