On December 21, 2008, a group of 35 students from APU including international students from 9 countries and regions such as Bangladesh, Indonesia and Vietnam went to support the Ritsumeikan Panthers American Football Team who appeared in the 63rd Koshien Bowl to decide the top university team in the Kansai and Kanto regions.
Winners in their respective Kansai and Kanto American football leagues, the Ritsumeikan University Panthers and Hosei University Tomahawks faced off to decide Japan's number 1 university team.
The support tour was organized as part of the APU/Ritsumeikan University student exchange program and aims to develop the Ritsumeikan Academy identity. The participants came together and gave their rousing support to the team and gave their impressions of the tour, "I was so touched and amazed by the good performance by the Ritsumeikan supporters, the bands, cheerleaders, students and old boys", "through this tour we were able to advance exchange between international and domestic students. I hope to make use of the relationships I have made in my future extracurricular activities." The support tour proved to be a great opportunity to improve the unity of the Ritsumeikan Academy members.
During the match, the Ritsumeikan Panthers came out on top to claim their 6th title and their first in 4 years with a score of 19 – 8 through their tight defense in a game which proved to be a defensive battle to shut down each others' running play –a strength of both teams.
In the New Year on Saturday, January 3, the Ritsumeikan Panthers beat the Panasonic Electric Works Impulse (non-collegiate team) 13 – 17 at the Tokyo Dome to claim their 3rd title and first in 5 years at the 62nd Japan American Football Tournament Rice Bowl to decide the Japan collegiate and non-collegiate champion team.
