On Wednesday, May 26, 2010, fourteen APU international students were appointed as International Exchange Support Advisors to Saiki City at a Certificate Presentation Ceremony held at APU.
The ceremony was attended by Superintendent of the Saiki City Board of Education,
Mr. BUNDO Takashi, in addition to fourteen primary and junior high school principals from Saiki City actively involved in exchange activities with APU.
Mr. BUNDO Takashi presented certificates to each of the new student advisors and said that they had been selected from many applications and that it was a competitive selection process. He continued, "The advisors involved in teaching activities should not aim just to teach English, rather I hope that you will share your different cultures and become a bridge between APU and Saiki City".
APU President SHUN Korenaga then addressed the audience and spoke of the international environment of APU and the numerous opportunities for students to improve their language skills. He also offered the new Student Advisors a few words of advice and spoke of the importance of conducting exchange events, the role of APU students, and the level of responsibility needed when taking part in these activities.
After receiving their certificates, the fourteen new Advisors introduced themselves to the audience and expressed their gratitude to the officials of Saiki City for selecting them. YUAN Liping (APM2, China) commented that, "The outside world seems far away from the kids in Saiki City but through teaching English and sharing our cultures I feel that we can bring the world closer to them".
APU signed a Friendship Exchange Agreement with Tsurumi Town (now Saiki City, Tsurumi) in July 2003 and Kamae Town (now Saiki City, Kamae) in April 2004. International students from APU are chosen and appointed as advisors to Saiki City, helping to facilitate international exchange activities such as visiting primary and junior high schools to interact with local children. Students started working as 'Saiki City Cultural Advisors' in July 2006, after Tsurumi and Kamae amalgamated with Saiki City and a new friendship exchange agreement was signed.
The cultural advisors will be involved in approximately 10 lessons and projects, predominately at Saiki City primary and junior high schools, throughout the 12 month period.
