On Wednesday, September 21, 2011, Ms. Fawzia TALOUT MEKNASSI, a renowned international journalist and social activist from Morocco, delivered an RCAPS* seminar on the topic of “New Media, Movement toward Democracy, and the Place of Woman in Islamic Societies.”

The seminar provided information about the country’s current transition toward economic, social and political democracy according to the newly established constitution.

The role of new media in this transition and the changes in the social status of women were also major themes.

AP-IMAC Director NAKATA Yukihiko Gives Invited Lecture at International Conference on Environmental Aspects of Bangladesh (ICEAB11)

The International Conference on Environmental Aspects of Bangladesh (ICEAB11) was held from September 9-11, 2011, at the University of Kitakyushu in Kokura, Kitakyushu City. At the conference, AP-IMAC Director NAKATA Yukihiko gave an invited lecture titled “Dynamics of Innovation in Solar Cell Industry: Divergence of Solar Cell Technologies.”
Organized by BENJapan, the Japanese branch of the Bangladesh Environmental Network, the ICEAB11 was an international environmental conference whose main participants were students – mostly PhD – from Bangladesh who are currently doing research about the environment at various universities in Japan and Japanese researchers who are doing field research on Bangladesh’s environmental problems. Various research approaches were presented at the conference, including sociological, agricultural, and engineering (e.g. water, drainage treatment, IT). Participants from Japan came from several universities such as Kyushu University, University of Kitakyushu, University of the Ryukyus, and Gifu University.

Invited Lecture: Dynamics of Innovation in Solar Cell Industry: Divergence of Solar Cell Technologies　　
Presentation contents: Research was done on innovation dynamics of the solar cell industry using cases of Japan, the US, China, and Germany. The findings showed that a very diverse range of technologies are being incorporated into business. There are 3 conditions to accept the diverse technologies, which are simple technology, rapidly expanding markets, and high motivation to enter the industry. With these conditions, many companies use accessible and adaptable technology to get into the solar cell market. This leads to a diverse range of technologies being incorporated into business. The results of this analysis can be useful for Bangladesh by suggesting that companies use accessible and adaptable technology to enter the solar cell market.
Many people were interested in this research, and Director Nakata answered questions about cost, the reason for China’s big breakthrough with solar cell technology, and other topics.

Afterwards, Mr. Nazrul Islam, the Global Coordinator for the Bangladesh Environmental Network, presented Director Nakata with a commemorative plaque for his invited lecture.
The International Conference on Environmental Aspects of Bangladesh is planned to be held at the University of Kitakyushu again in 2012. Participating in research exchange with Bangladesh is expected to help AP-IMAC continue to fulfill its mission of making international contributions and building a global network.

Mr. Junanto Herdiawan (Bank Indonesia) and Prof. Honna Jun (Ritsumeikan University) gives an RCAPS Seminar:

On Friday, July 15, 2011, the 2nd Seminar of Indonesia was held under the theme "Locating Indonesia's Role in the Asia Pacific's Economy and Security Dynamics".

Organized by the Ritsumeikan APU Indonesia Society (APUIna) and RCAPS, this seminar discussed a variety of issues related to economic and security affairs in Indonesia, Asia Pacific and beyond. This seminar, which was conducted for the second time, has become an annual event.

Mr.ISHII, Foreign Policy Bureau gives an RCAPS Seminar:

On Wednesday, July 6, 2011, Mr. Masafumi ISHII, Deputy Director – General, Foreign Policy Bureau delivered an Ritsumeikan Center for Asia Pacific Studies (RCAPS) seminar entitled “Strategic Panorama - What are the Main Trends in the Region and What Should be Done Today for the Stability and Prosperity of the Region in 20 Years?”.

The seminar provided information about Japan’s future over the next 20 years along with major regional players such as the USA, China, Russia, Korea, India, and ASEAN countries.
