On Sunday, February 14, 2010, the APU Fair-Trade Circle "Ones' 1 Fair-Trade" held a joint exchange meeting with Ritsumeikan Uji Senior High School members of "Beleaf" – a similar Fair-Trade circle active at Ritsumeikan University.
This event was held as part of the annual exchange camps held between Ones' 1 Fair-Trade and Beleaf and aims to promote high school students' awareness of fair-trade* and international cooperation.
Under the guidance of the university circle students, the participating students worked in three groups: developed nations, developing nations and least developed nations, as they played a "trading game" which involved teams vying to earn the most money through trading goods. Students learnt first-hand about trade systems and fair-trade. At the conclusion of the game, the participating high school students commented, "I can understand just how difficult it is for countries to negotiate on trade. My knowledge of trade has vastly improved".
This was the first such exchange event held between APU, Ritsumeikan University and Uji Senior High School. We look forward to more such exchange events taking hold in Uji Senior High School and throughout the entire Ritsumeikan Academy.
*Fair-Trade is an organized social movement aimed at alleviating global poverty and promoting sustainability. This movement hopes to improve the quality of life and encourage the self-sustainability of producers and workers in developing countries through the purchase of raw materials and products of those countries at a fair price.
