APU concludes Friendship Agreement with Tsukumi City

On Wednesday, February 15, 2012, APU and Tsukumi City concluded a Friendship Agreement at a signing ceremony held at the Oita Prefectural Office. Under the theme of “A healthy Tsukumi City and lively town development”, Tsukumi is pressing ahead with urban development initiatives under the guiding principle of local government and community cooperation. Meanwhile agreement partner, APU, aims to nurture globally-minded graduates as a centre for education and research. This agreement serves as the starting point for further exchange and the foundation of a solid collaborative and cooperative relationship between the two parties.

In attendance at the signing ceremony were Mayor of Tsukumi City, YOSHIMOTO Koji, APU President KORENAGA Shun, and as official witness, Governor of Oita Prefecture, HIROSE Katsusada. During the ceremony, APU President KORENAGA said, “I am sure that this agreement will mark the beginning of greater engagement between APU and Tsukumi at the local and civil level”. In response, Mayor YOSHIMOTO said, “APU continues to play a leading role in the globalisation of Japanese tertiary education and has strong links with local municipalities. We look forward to working with APU as we work to resolve many of the issues that Tsukumi is faced with”.

Marking the 60th anniversary of its establishment in 2012, Tsukumi City is located in southern Oita Prefecture amidst the Nippo Coastline Quasi-National Park. Blessed with beautiful natural surroundings, a rugged coastline, and strong fishing and citrus sectors, Tsukumi is renowned for its tuna and also as a popular tourist spot within Oita Prefecture and further afield.

Established at the invitation of Oita Prefecture and Beppu City, APU places a great importance on contributing to the internationalization and revitalization of the region and has since concluded friendship agreements with 18 towns and cities in Oita and neighboring prefectures. APU continues to make its contribution to society and every year over 1000 students participate in a range of exchange events in Oita and neighboring prefectures.
