The "AY2008 Strategic University Partnership Support Project" (Regional partnership research / exchange student support / the establishment of a local hub for the development of high level human resources focusing on educational partnership) (General Partnership) filed by 7 Universities and Colleges, including APU, with Oita University as the Representative University, has been adopted by the MEXT "AY2008 Strategic University Partnership Support Project"
The "AY2008 Strategic University Partnership Support Project" is a new MEXT project started in AY2008 which promotes the active partnership of national and private universities through effective application of the educational research resources in each university as a base for regional knowledge and aims to increase the level of educational research's sophistication, individuality, characteristic clarification and strengthen the basis of university management. This year there were 94 applications and of those, 54 partnership projects were adopted.
To date, Oita Prefecture has been leading the regions of Japan in regional development movements and the education of exchange students.
The 8 universities and organizations in the Oita/Beppu region (*) have already established the University Consortium Oita in this field and are holding partnership projects. The "Regional partnership research / exchange student support / the establishment of a local hub for the development of high level human resources focusing on educational partnership" activities also aims to strengthen the existing organization with real results and at the same time promote, in addition to the aspects of education, entrance examinations and university management, general inter-university partnership.

A 'Director' will be placed at the 'Research Factory' – a space for collaborative research – and will regulate and guide inter-university collaborative research. Through this process we can nurture up-and-coming researchers and high level engineers.
Strengthen employment support and strive to elevate this region as a model for international co-existence through establishing exchange students in the region
With regards to education, the "Education Partnership Symposium" (Tentative title) will be established and will plan and put in to place such programs as Common Education based on new concepts. Furthermore, the consortium will promote partnership public lectures aimed at business and the life long learning of citizens, in particular, the elderly.
Even after the 3 year period of activities has concluded, the consortium will further develop the partnership initiatives and, prior to and following the conclusion of the initiatives, will establish the "Oita Higher Education Consortium" as a general base for the nurturing of high level human resources in the region as the organization to cohesively carry out these activities.
