Every year during the spring (May-July) and fall semesters (November-January), APU hosts a series of Multicultural Weeks. During each week the spotlight is put on one of the many countries and regions represented on campus and that country’s culture and language are introduced and celebrated through a range of student-led events and activities.
Between 100 and 150 students take a central role and work together to create each of the Multicultural Weeks. A feature of these Weeks is the fact that approximately a third of Week participants are not native to the Week’s featured country or region. These non-native students work under the guidance of native students to become expert ambassadors for their culture. Through this event students learn how to develop a greater sense of pride in their native culture and a greater respect for others, while also acquiring the kinds of skills sought in global human resources including mutual understanding and decision making skills, initiative and the ability to work well as part of a diverse team.
From January 6 until January 10, 2014, the Nepali Week was held at APU. A delicious array of traditional dishes was available on the cafeteria menu in addition to traditional dance and music performances held throughout the campus and the Grand Show held on the final day of the week.
Footage of the Grand Show was streamed live on the internet via Ustream. Please be sure to tune in and enjoy the colourful performances by APU’s multilingual and multicultural students.
Nepal, a unique country with diverse cultures and various natural resources, is known as the homeland of the Himalayas. With the presence of world’s highest peak, Mount Everest (8848m), eight of the world’s 14 highest peaks, 35% of its land covered by forest, 20% of land protected as National Parks, 60 ethnic groups and 92 spoken languages, Nepal has a wealth of assets that remain unknown to many. With this in mind, Nepali Week aims to promote Nepali culture in a way that allows people from all over the world to get a feel of what it is like in Nepal.
Nepali Week will be held from January 6th to 10th, 2014. Starting on Monday, January 6th, we will introduce our mascot, “Lakhey”, with a parade around the APU fountain. Next, on Tuesday, a film festival will be held in the cafeteria where we will provide you with a glimpse of our homeland. On Thursday, we will have a hair-braiding and hand henna (mehendi) booth set up for the entire day. Finally, on Friday, we will present the Grand Show entitled “MunaMadan”, a famous Nepali play that reflects our Nepalese values and traditions. A show of drama, emotions and sentiments, this is something not to be missed. In addition to these single-day events, we have tried our best to bring Nepalese cuisine to life by having Purunima, a Nepalese restaurant in Beppu, come to the campus to offer a mouth-watering menu of dishes like momo, samosa and naan. There will also be Nepalese food on sale in the cafeteria, with a portion of the proceeds going to help physically challenged Nepalese children back home. Moreover, for the entire week, a photo gallery at the Pacific Café will showcase Nepal through the lens of a young Nepali photographer.
Trying our best and working very hard for this annual event, we hope to showcase our culture and traditions to the maximum. Don’t miss out on this rare opportunity!
