Tradition Instruments Blend with Rock

Mongolia, which has suddenly become famous as a location for dramas. Many people must have been captivated by its beautiful nature. Odno, who hails from Mongolia, is often asked questions like, "Do you go to school on horseback?" or "Do you eat a lot of meat?" due to the image of nomadic people living on the grasslands.

She lived in Ulan Bator, the capital where half of the country's population of about 3.45 million resides. From the city lined with modern buildings, a beautiful vast grassland appears just a 30-minute drive away. In winter, there are days when temperatures drop to minus 40 degrees Celsius, so cold that even they don't know how to cope. Therefore, she advised, "It's better to travel here in the summer!"

Modern buildings line the capital, Ulan Bator

In Mongolia today, pop music is popular among young people. One particularly famous band is The Hu, known for blending traditional instruments like the horsehead fiddle with rock, creating a visual style. They have topped the music charts on Billboard in the U.S. and performed at Japan's outdoor music event, the Fuji Rock Festival, showcasing their talents on the world stage.

I, too, was enchanted by their innovative sound. In their music videos, set in vast lands reminiscent of the old empire, band members appear in ethnic costumes resembling Genghis Khan, arriving not on horses but on motorcycles, which adds a modern and amusing touch.

While preserving its beautiful nature and traditions, Mongolia is also developing new cultures. I'm eager to visit, so I've already started planning a trip for the summer. Odno, bayallara (thank you).
