Governor of Oita Prefecture
Mr. SATO Kiichiro
Congratulations to all of you who are beginning your studies at the prestigious Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely welcome all of you to Oita Prefecture, whether you came from within Japan or from another country or region. I would also like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all of your family members on this joyous occasion.
Since opening in April 2000, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) has chalked up a stellar track record as a leader in the globalization of higher education in Japan by producing numerous outstanding graduates who now contribute to international society, as well as through the acquisition of several international accreditations. Last year, APU celebrated a significant milestone—its 25th anniversary. I would like to once again express my gratitude for the university’s many contributions in the internationalization of the local community and the promotion of our prefecture’s appeal by not only in enhancing the educational environment, but also in promoting multicultural coexistence and cultivating internationally-minded talent.
In recent years, as industries have become increasingly internationalized, the human resources sought by companies are also changing. There is a growing need for multicultural managers who, in addition to specialized skills, possess an understanding of diverse cultures, religions, customs, and so on. Against this backdrop, last July, APU signed a comprehensive agreement of cooperation with National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University in Taiwan and launched a global talent development program for the semiconductor industry in cooperation with semiconductor companies in Kyushu.
Amid the increasingly severe situation that universities throughout Japan find themselves in, APU continues to take on these kinds of ambitious initiatives and develop as a center of knowledge that Oita Prefecture can be proud of both at home and abroad.
As a university that is open to the local community, in addition to promoting the internationalization of Oita Prefecture, APU has consistently contributed to regional revitalization by implementing a wide range of exchange programs for elementary, junior high, and high school students, undertaking volunteer activities, and engaging in industry-university collaboration aimed at solving local issues.
You have enrolled in a global university that is firmly rooted in the community, and I am certain that you will make lasting friendships and learn many things as you study on APU’s multicultural campus, a place that attracts students from over 100 countries and regions and where you are always exposed to the latest global trends. Everything you learn and everyone you meet at APU will help you grow as a person and develop the ability to create the future.
As for Oita Prefecture, we are blessed with bountiful nature, a rich history and culture, and delicious food. During your time at APU, I hope you all enjoy what Oita has to offer and proactively interact with people from all parts of the prefecture. I also hope that Oita will become your second home and that, one day, you will serve as bridges between people and between different regions as well as between Oita and the wider world.
In closing, I would like to wish you all the best in your endeavors, and I pray for the continued prosperity of Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University.

Mayor of Beppu City
Mr. NAGANO Yasuhiro
On behalf of the citizens of Beppu, I would like to congratulate you on your admission to Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, and I would also like to extend my heartfelt greetings to your family members.
APU is a one-of-a-kind learning environment where students from more than 100 countries and regions come together to learn from each other amid a diversity of cultures and values. Starting today, in addition to what you learn in the classroom, you can expect to greatly expand your horizons and potential through dialogue and collaboration. In accordance with its APU2030 Vision, APU has created an environment where you can acquire the qualities you will need as the leaders of the future. I also hold high expectations for your studies that are directly linked to Beppu's strengths, in the College of Sustainability and Tourism and beyond.
The world today is confronted with a wide array of issues, including climate change, natural disasters, and division. What is needed in times like these is not just knowledge, but the ability to collaborate while respecting differences and to take action to solve problems. I hope you will all challenge yourselves without fear of failure and keep asking questions.
Beppu, the city that you now call home, is known for its hot springs, but its appeal is much wider. The strength of this city lies in its warmth, an almost “meddlesome” kindness that naturally embraces newcomers and wholeheartedly supports those who take on new challenges. If you ever happen to run into any problems, please do not hesitate to reach out to those around you. The people of Beppu will surely lend you their heartfelt support.
Learning also takes places off campus in the form of participating in local events, talking with local people, and conducting fieldwork. Each of these experiences will enrich your learning and become valuable assets for your future. I hope you will actively engage with Beppu's culture and way of life and make this city your “home away from home.”
In closing, I would like to express my sincere hope for the continued growth of Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University and for a fulfilling student life for all of you, the new students of APU.

Mayor of Beppu
