Come to APU and enjoy studying in a global village. Our campus is filled with the exciting sounds of Japanese and English, but also Chinese, Korean, Indonesian and many other different languages.
The “official” languages of APU are English and Japanese, but we don’t require you to speak fluent Japanese when you first arrive. Students can apply to APU on an English or Japanese language basis in either the spring or fall. In this way, APU has brought together a diversity of students from around Japan and the world with one big thing in common: they all have ambitions and dreams for the future.
Approximately 80% of all undergraduate courses at APU are offered in both English and Japanese. Courses at the graduate school are offered exclusively in English. Student handouts, reference materials, notices, guidance sessions and more are all offered in both English and Japanese. In addition to English and Japanese, students also have the opportunity to learn any of the six additional major languages of the Asia Pacific region offered at APU, namely Chinese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Malay-Indonesian, and Spanish.
Under this framework, when students first enter APU they study foundation papers in their university entrance basis language – English or Japanese – while also undergoing intensive language training in the opposite language. By the time students reach their 3rd or 4th year they have achieved a level of proficiency that allows them to study major papers in either language.
In this way, by the time students graduate they are equipped with the specialist knowledge and language proficiency they need to succeed in the global marketplace.
